Journal - Indoors

After my exertions of Monday, Tuesday found me feeling kind of sore. My legs were sore from squatting down to plant potatoes and my shoulders were sore from digging. Tuesday wasn’t as nice weather-wise either so it was a good day to stay inside and recuperate a bit.

On Wednesday I was feeling better but it was downright chilly outside, not to mention gray and windy. Temperatures stayed in the 50’s all afternoon so it was a good day to stay in as well and get a little work done inside.

I usually spend my mornings at the computer: writing for Drums In The Deep or Audiobook Heaven, maintaining the blogs, balancing the checkbook, or whatever needs to be done.

After I had finished what I needed to do at the computer, I decided to make biscuits. Since we had plans to go to Mike and Bobbi’s for Easter dinner, we had our own little Easter dinner here on Good Friday. We cooked up a ham and potatoes and all that but had forgotten to pick up rolls or other bread item. So that day I went online and found a biscuit recipe and tried it out. Well, those biscuits were pretty darn good, but I like to experiment with recipes and Wednesday was a good day to do that.

I ended up making 3 half batches of biscuits. First I substituted buttermilk for the milk that the recipe called for and darn if they weren’t even better. The second half-batch I tried more baking powder to see if they would puff up even bigger than the originals. They didn’t really puff up more, but were a bit more crumbly. Joni and I decided we didn’t like them as well that way. On the third batch I used brown sugar instead of white and also doubled the amount since there was hardly any in them to begin with. We could taste a bit more sweetness in them, which was kind of good so I may keep that in the recipe. That gave us enough biscuits to last a couple of days so I stopped there for the time being.

Next I wanted to do some work in the basement. Mom had recently procured a good-sized piece of carpet from the remodeling of the church parsonage in Gibbon and had it in her garage. On Easter Sunday Mike and Bobbi were kind enough to run it out to the house for us in their pick-up so it is now rolled up in our basement. We’re going to see what we can do with it but first need to clean up the basement a little.

The first step was to get the recyclables out of there. We’ve been saving up glass and plastic down there for just about as long as we’ve lived here and had a pretty good amount. Not long after I got my sight back I had cleaned up some of that, bagging and boxing it up, but we never had made a trip to Kearney with it yet. So on Wednesday I got the last of it gathered up and ready to go. Then when Adam got home from school, Joni pulled the truck up to the back door and we loaded it up. I was pleasantly surprised to see that it all fit in the truck because I thought it would take two trips. The plan is to drop it off at the recycling center in Kearney before my doctor appointment on Thursday afternoon. It’s good to have all that out of the basement and we now have a lot more room down there to get things organized.

  1. Finally...someone else to have back and legs hurting! :P (kidding)

It's pretty good to have someone clean up the mess I had of this house for three years. Yup, we'll have been here 3 years come April 26!

Looking forward to a productive Summer, too! :D
