Pumpkin Chronicles Day 28

Pumpkin patch central, day 28So here we are at day 28! Can you believe it’s been four weeks already? These are the pumpkins in Pumpkin Patch Central, in the garden near the house. As you can see, the pumpkin plants are growing at what is almost an alarming rate. I’ve been keeping an eye out for some vines to start, but none so far. From what I’ve read, it sounds like the vines could start just about any time now. Then there should be some blossoms sometime around week 10. A lot of grass and weedy stuff was beginning grow in here but I went in the other day and dug it all up with the little 3-pronged hand rake thingy. I know the weeds will be back, but for now the patch looks pretty clean.

Pumpkin patch east, day 28And here’s Pumpkin Patch East, across the driveway. These look reasonably healthy but I’m a little worried about them. The soil here is much more dry than in the garden, and seems to be sandier and even gravelly. I took these pics yesterday, on day 28, but didn’t get them up until today due to some internet difficulties we were having. Even though the pumpkins looked okay yesterday, today they look kind of limp even though we got a little rain yesterday. Also, it’s hard to tell from these pics, but we lost a few plants recently. We had some pretty high winds for about 3 days and I think the poor things just got whipped to death. Not surprising I suppose since the leaves are getting pretty big and the plants are generally kind of top-heavy. Not to worry though, there are still plenty of healthy plants left!
