Dream Diary - At The Football Game

I haven’t recorded a dream here for quite a while. I was just thinking the other day that it seems like I don’t remember my dreams as well as I did while I was blind. But I had one last night that is sticking with me, so here goes.

I was going to a Nebraska football game with some friends. The only friend I remember specifically was Brent Richardson. Jon Nutter may have been there but I’m not sure. I think there were some friends of Brent’s that I didn’t know that well, classmates of his from school. We were walking through the stadium, which was a lot like a tremendously huge shopping mall with large hallways and shops lining the sides and lots of people walking or milling about.

Here the dream skips and I’m on the sideline of the football field watching the game. All the people I was with are gone. There is a progression of events here that I don’t fully remember but it goes something like this: During the game I caught a ball that was thrown to a Nebraska receiver but went out of bounds. I tossed the ball to the player it was intended for. Later in the game that same player scored a touchdown and he tossed me the scoring ball so I could hang on to it for him until after the game, which I did. After the game, I went with that player into a kind of lounge area where the players were hanging around after showering and changing.

Here’s where things get weird. Two or three of the players, not including “my” player, had removed my right shoe and sock and were rubbing something like baby lotion on my foot and kind of laughing among themselves about it. I have no idea why they were doing it, or why I let them, but by the time I wanted them to stop I felt powerless to do so, them being big muscular football players and all. I finally asked them what the stuff was, and the answer I got was “Tane Acetate”. I got the impression it was something they had learned about in one of their college science classes. I asked, “What does it do?” One of them pointed down at my foot and when I looked I was horrified to see that I had several extra toes growing, a couple growing right out the side of my foot below the pinky toe. They had played a trick on me, and a pretty mean one. I felt pretty stupid for thinking I had made some new friends. I asked how long it took for the stuff to wear off, and they indicated that my foot would never be right again. Without another word I collected my sock and shoe and limped away. I knew the shoe wouldn’t fit over my newly deformed foot so I just carried it.

Then the dream turned into something very familiar. I was back in the mall-like stadium area looking for the way out. The place was nothing but one hallway after another, all looking vaguely the same. I’ve had lots of dreams like this, a few of which I’ve documented here in my blog.. The place was so huge and I couldn’t just find any old doorway out, it had to be the one to where my car was parked. I tried to remember which shops we had passed on the way in but I hadn’t been paying that much attention and could remember only a few details. One of those details was a comic book store by the way, also a recurring theme in my dreams.

So I wandered. At one point I thought I had made it into the stands overlooking the football field and might be able to retrace my steps from there, but when I got to the railing and looked down to the field I saw that it was actually a swimming pool and some kind of swimming or diving competition was under way. At another time, I found a door that went out to the street. I looked out and knew it wasn’t the right way, and I was scared to go out fearing that the door would lock behind me. Even though I was lost I felt better being lost inside rather than out. There were lots of people around but I knew it would do no good to ask for help because I had no idea what area my car was parked in, I would only recognize it if I saw it myself. Through all this I still had my shoe off and the extra toes gradually receded, although one of my natural toes disappeared as well.

So I guess you might say that was a bad dream. I actually felt myself begin to wake up and I immediately thought “Good, wake up and get out of here!” which is exactly what happened.

Dream Diary - Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow

I had a couple of unusual dreams the last two nights, both involving my hair.
On Monday night, I dreamed that my hair was falling out. Not just a little bit, but in large clumps. It was kind of like when Sassie is in full-blown shedding mode and you can’t even touch her without getting a handful of hair. In the dream, I would run my hand through my hair and big clumps would come out.
I used to have dreams about my teeth falling out. For several years I had a lot of trouble with my teeth. Then, about a year ago, I finally got them fixed up; as you may recall I had three pulled and one crowned. Since then I haven’t had any more dreams about my teeth. I don’t know what prompted this dream about my hair though. I’m not having any trouble with that as far as I know.
Then, On Tuesday night, I had a dream about going to the barber. It was an unusual barber shop however, more closely resembling an office setup, a large room with open work stations all around. The whole place was dimly lit, which is common in my dreams now that I think about it. My barber was Ken, who I worked with at UPS.
Anyway, I sat down and Ken shampooed my hair like some barbers do. He didn’t rinse the shampoo out though. He left for a while, leaving me sitting there with soapy hair. I sat there for a long time, with Ken popping up now and again. Through dream logic, I began to understand that Ken didn’t know how to cut hair and he was trying to find someone to show him what to do, but I guess he couldn’t find anyone.
I sat in the chair for a long time until it was time for the place to close and everyone was leaving. I finally rinsed my hair out myself. My friend Jon Nutter showed up. He was trying to reassure me that someone would take care of my hair; he was one of the barbers there. Ken finally showed up again with a man I believe was the owner. He said I would get $3.50 off my next haircut. I wasn’t very happy with that, but that’s about all I remember.
Pretty strange dreams, and unusual that they happened two nights in a row. I don’t really sit around obsessing about my hair like I used to do with my teeth, although I do sometimes wonder what it looks like now. I know my hairline is receding and I wonder how noticeable it is, and I wonder how much gray is starting to show since I last saw it.
Well, I didn’t really care for either of those dreams, so I hope they don’t become a regular thing.

Dream Diary - Grandpa's War

I guess it’s been a while since I had a dream that seemed significant to me, or one that I could remember anyway. Last night, however, I had one that is really sticking with me.
It started out in a house that is unfamiliar to me. In the house was myself, Mom, Dad, Grandma Brandt, and I think my sister was there too. I don’t know whose house it was, but I think someone was getting ready to move out. It seemed like there was a lot of clutter around, and there was also a carpet steamer. The steamer belonged to Dad in this dream, and I was thinking how handy it would be to have one, so I asked him how much it had cost. In typical Dad fashion, he said, “Those of us who work for a living pay attention to how much things cost.” I said something to him, but I can’t remember exactly what. Something like “Okay, that’s good.” Then I went outside through the front door.
The front stoop of this house was a concrete landing of six or seven steps. Grandpa Meril Dean was sitting on one of the lower steps talking on a cell phone, something he never did in life because they hadn’t been developed yet. Grandpa’s hound dog, Barney, was sitting about three steps up from him, so I sat down next to the dog and began to pet him. I got the impression that Grandpa was talking to an old friend, reminiscing about the war. In reality, Grandpa did serve with the Marines in World War II.
After a minute or two, Grandpa hung up the phone, and he said to me, “Do you know what happened at Hondu?” “Hondu” is exactly what he said, and to my knowledge this is not a real place, but in the dream I understood that he was referring to a WWII battle. I felt a moment of regret at not knowing what had happened there, and I think I considered lying to him so as not to seem ignorant, but in the end I answered, “Not exactly.”
So he began telling me the story of what he had experienced at Hondu. I don’t really remember the details, but definitely remember the way he told the story. He was very animated, going through the actions and doing sound effects and everything. At one point he actually pulled a handgun out from somewhere to show me how he had drawn a bead on the enemy. For one crazy moment I was afraid that someone would come out the front door, and Grandpa, caught up in the moment, would accidentally pull the trigger. That didn’t happen though. That kind of animation was nothing like Grandpa in real life, but his old familiar gruffness was still very much present. During his story, he also mentioned Tarawa, which I think is a real place, one of those Pacific islands where the Japanese fought so fiercely against our Marines. After that, my dream started going off on some crazy tangent that I don’t really remember, and I woke up pretty soon after that.
Grandpa died in 1992, and since then I can’t tell you how many times I have wished that I had talked to Grandpa about the war and got him to tell me some stories. It is one of my biggest regrets. In a way, I got to experience that a little bit through this dream. When I woke up, the first thought that popped into my head was, “That was an awesome dream, God. Thank you.”

Dream Diary - Lost in the Parking Lot

Thursday night, I had another dream of being lost. At the beginning of the dream, I had just bought a new car. It was kind of a smallish, green car, similar to the 1997 Grand Am I used to own, but not quite.

I was driving my new car along a highway and started into a bend in the road. I was going too fast and the car began to skid. I was trying to steer out of the skid, but then the dream jumped forward.

Evidently I didn’t crash, because next I was at work. One of my supervisors from UPS was there, and a couple of other people I worked with but we were in something like a classroom with my supervisor at the teacher's desk. I don't remember very much of that part, but then it was time to go home.

I had parked my new car in a parking lot a few blocks away from work and here’s where the trouble began.

I got to the parking lot and started looking for my car, but I couldn’t find it. There were quite a few smallish green cars in the lot, but none of them were mine. On one side of the lot was something like an apartment building, and on the other side of that was more parking area. I went over there to look around and was disturbed to see that this lot looked very much like the other one. Well, that lot was connected to another one, and so on, and so on. All the lots looked the same, and they all had smallish green cars.

At one point, I ran into a guy I used to work with. I was happy because I thought he might help me, even though I didn’t know him very well. We started talking, but then he went over and started talking to some other people and forgot about me.

I spent some more time looking, and then ran into some other people I knew. It was a couple of my high school classmates, Craig Shiers, and his cousin Matt Shiers. I thought for sure they would help me, but again, they went off with some other people and left me there.

At one point, I pulled out my cell phone, thinking the battery would probably be dead. I was surprised to find it had a full charge and a strong signal, but I never used it. I couldn’t think of anyone to call who might be able to help me. I considered calling the police and reporting the car stolen, then just waiting for them to find it and call me back. I didn't though. The car was new and had no license plates, and I thought they probably wouldn't be able to find it because of that. There was also a brief moment when I didn't think I would be able to use the phone because I was blind, even though I could see perfectly well. The old blindness always seems to seep into my dreams.

So I just wandered from parking lot to parking lot, looking for my new car. Sometimes the neighborhoods seemed a little rough, with seedy looking characters lurking about. This frightened me, but they never bothered me.

Well, like I said before, I frequently have dreams where I feel lost and alone. This was just another variation on the theme. I wonder what the new car was about. Getting a new car and almost crashing it, then losing it. Two bad dreams in one week, yuck.

Matthew 7:7 "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.

Dream Diary - Teeth

I had a really awful dream Tuesday night, a recurring dream that I have periodically. In this dream, my teeth were falling out. Just one or two to start with, but then more and more. Some of the teeth were breaking up into pieces as they came out, but several were falling out whole as well. Some of them really bled a lot too, but others didn’t. My teeth just kept falling out and I was spitting them into a trash can. It seemed like there were about a hundred of them, way too many anyway. The more came out, the more I started to panic. I remember wondering how I would ever be able to eat again with no teeth. It was pretty terrible and I suppose this is about as close as I ever get to a nightmare. There were several other people in this dream, but I don’t remember who they were or what they were doing. They didn’t seem to mind the fact that my teeth were falling out, they just went about their business.

Like I said, this is a recurring dream that I have had many times. This is the second time I’ve had it since we moved to Nebraska last April. It’s not always exactly the same, but it’s always about the teeth. It's no mystery to me where this dream comes from. I’ve had bad teeth for a long time. Even when I was working and had insurance I could never afford to go to the dentist. I always wake up from this dream in a real fright, heart racing and all. I always have to check my teeth when I wake to see if they’re loose.

It was just a bad night all around. I was up late working on my blog and didn't go to bed until after one o'clock. Even then it took me a while to start drifting off. Wen I finally started falling asleep, a thunderstorm rolled through, so I was up even longer. I finally got to sleep and had that bad dream which I woke from in kind of a panic. Later on, another thunderstorm came through, this one even louder, and woke me up again. No more bad dreams though, thank goodness.

It occurred to me that I really don’t have many bad dreams. Usually just this one about my teeth. I guess that means my life isn’t too bad, doesn’t it? If my teeth falling out is the worst my mind can come up with, I guess I’ve had a pretty good life.

Now that I mention it, that reminds me of a dream I used to have when I was a kid. Younger than ten, at least, because it took place in the house I grew up in out on the farm. I used to have this dream where I was out in the corn field at night, and there was a wolf chasing me. I never actually saw the wolf, but I knew it was a wolf anyway.

I would run and run through the corn field until I finally came out of it, close to where our house was. In those days, our house was closely bordered on two sides by corn fields.

When I finally got up to the house, I threw open the front door and ran inside, only to find that it wasn’t our house, but the school I went to. The school was dark and empty and I would run down the hall trying the doors, finding them all locked.

Well, I was just a kid then. Wolves are scary when you’re a kid and sometimes corn fields are too, I guess. Still, the lack of scary dreams would seem to indicate that I’ve had a pretty non-scary life.

Dream Diary - Comic Books

Sunday night I dreamed about comic books. I was In some department store, I don’t know what store it was. There was a whole aisle of comic books, like the magazine aisle, but all comic books. I walked down the aisle, looking at the comics longingly. I wanted to buy some but I knew I couldn't really afford it. Finally, I decided that it wouldn't hurt to just buy a few. I started picking some up, Spider-Man and Captain America. When I had about five or six in my hands, I suddenly realized that I wouldn’t even be able to read them because I'm blind. I was going to put them back, but I decided to go ahead and get them and just save them until I could see again.

Have you ever had a dream where you knew you were dreaming and you could control it? I’ve never achieved dream control myself, and I’m not sure I even believe in that, but I think I had something similar in this dream. At one point, I noticed there were no Batman comics. As soon as I thought about Batman, I lookd a little further down the aisle and there they were. After that I thought about X-men comics. I turned around and there they were, right behind me.

I used to collect comic books. From 1990 until about 2000 I collected quite a lot of them, I have several boxes of them in the basement. I hope they’re not all damp and moldy. I finally had to give up collecting them because I couldn’t afford it anymore.

This reminds me of another dream I had a while back. I thought I had written about that one too, but didn’t find it. In that one, I was at a shopping mall. There was a comic book store in the mall and I was standing outside it, looking in. On one side of the store was kind of a stage area. It had three rows of stools in tiers. Sitting on the stools, were people dressed up like super-heroes. There were probably a couple dozen of them. It was like one of those window displays you sometimes see with live people instead of mannequins. They weren’t acting like mannequins though, they were moving a little and talking to each other. A guy named Rodney Heyen was there, also looking in. Rodney went to my high school although he was several years older than me. He had a younger brother who was in my grade. Anyway, Rodney started to say “It’s like being,” and I finished the sentence for him, “at a zoo.” We had the same thought and laughed about that.

Comic books are one thing I really miss since going blind. All the sophisticated technology in the world won’t help me enjoy my comics again. I think that feeling was reflected in that second dream, standing outside the store, looking in. And in the first dream as well, wanting to buy the comics, but knowing I wouldn't be able to enjoy them even if I did buy them. And another dream where I could see, but in my mind I knew I was blind. I wonder how long it will be before I really am blind in my dreams.

Well, maybe someday I’ll be able to read my comic books again. Just one more thing to look forward to.

John 16:33 "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."

Dream Diary - Lost at the Pool

I had a really terrible night’s sleep last night. We went to bed at our regular time and I put on my headphones to listen to my audio book as usual. After a little while, however, my back started hurting. That happens to me once in a while. My back never seems to bother me during the day, just when I'm laying in bed. I got up to take some aspirin, but after I took them I remembered that the generic aspirin we get has caffeine in it. My back stopped hurting but I was wide awake after that.

I lay there for what seemed like a couple of hours listening to my book when I started to feel hungry. So I got up again and ate some Town House crackers, my favorite late night snack.

With my hunger taken care of I went back to bed. By then my back was starting to hurt again, but I didn’t want to take any more aspirin so I just lay there trying to decide if I should just get up. Pretty soon, Joni started to stir and she got up. I thought she was just going to the bathroom or something, but when I checked the time it was a little after six o’clock. That surprised me because I thought it was only about two or maybe three at the latest. Evidently I did sleep for a couple of hours without even realizing it. Also I took my headphones off at some point although I don’t remember that either. After Joni got up I put them back on. I started backing up my book to see where I had left off and sure enough I had missed a couple of hours. I decided to put the radio on then and I dozed until about nine o’clock.

In the hours between six and nine I dreamed about the swimming pool in Gibbon. The pool was different, though. It had a different shape and the surroundings were all different too. It was all surrounded by a tall chain link fence, though, just like in real life. I was trying to leave the pool but I couldn’t find my way out of the fence. I think the only way out of the fence was through the pool house where the showers are, but the building was like a maze inside and I just couldn’t get out. I could see my car through the fence, it was the red Probe I drove years and years ago, but I just couldn't get there.

The rest of the dream is mostly faded away. I have a vague impression that I did finally reach my car, but it turned out to be the wrong car. Like, I had thought it was mine, but it turned out not to be.

I think I mentioned this before, but I seem to have a lot of dreams where I am lost. No surprise there, I do kind of feel lost a lot of the time.

Well, anyway, I didn’t feel groggy and miserable today like I thought I would so that’s good. I didn’t work out today, though. I didn't have that much energy and I was afraid it would aggravate my back. I should sleep good tonight, I’ve never had back pain two nights in a row before.

Dream Diary - Money and Books

From Wednesday night:

I dreamed I was in Gibbon walking down Labarre Street, which is the main street in Gibbon. I was walking toward the railroad tracks and when I reached Front Street, I turned the corner to the left. There, scattered all over the sidewalk, were piles and piles of coins. It was mostly pennies, but there was some silver mixed in too. I started going through the coins, leaving the pennies, but picking up the quarters, dimes, and nickels.

The longer I picked through the coins, the more I began to find other things.. First, I started noticing coins which appeared to be foreign. They had strange markings on them and some had unusual shapes. I remember one in particular; it was similar to the gold presidential dollars they started minting a few years ago, but had rounded shapes around the edge. It was kind of like a child’s drawing of a flower. Then I started finding what appeared to be bars of gold. They were kind of long and thin.

The dream shifted a little here, and I was inside somewhere, I don’t know where. My friend Bob Johnson was there. I showed him the gold bars and asked him if he thought they were real. He took one and tore the end off of it, then turned it up to his mouth and poured out some kind of powdery candy. I tried one myself and it was a little bit like those old Flav-R-Straws. Or Pixie Sticks. They were called Pixie Sticks when I was a kid. Anyway, the gold bars were fake, like those chocolate coins they always have at Halloween, only with powder inside them.

I continued digging through the pile of coins, only now it was mostly junk instead of coins. I found a long spool with pieces of wire wrapped around it. I thought the wires were guitar strings. Bob plays the guitar, so I gave them to him and asked if he could use them. He unrolled one from the spool and stretched it between his hands. When he pulled on it it broke pretty easily, indicating that they were not really guitar strings.

The dream shifted again slightly. I was in the same place, but the room had become kind of long and narrow. One end of the room had bookshelves on all three walls that went all the way to the ceiling which was quite high. I was looking at some of the books that were high up on one shelf, when all of the books on that wall began to fall. I quickly turned to the shelves that were at my back, and as the books showered down on me I tried to climb up the opposite wall. I was afraid of being buried under all those books and wanted to climb to get above them.

That’s all I remember. Actually that’s quite a bit more than I usually remember of any one dream. Money and books, books and money. Money usually represents greed, and books would seem to represent knowledge, but it was the books that buried me. Or that I feared would bury me. Maybe it means that if I keep reading books and writing book reviews I will make money from them. Or maybe it means if I keep wasting my time on all those books instead of doing what I am supposed to be doing, they will be my doom. Maybe it means nothing at all. I wonder about that part where the gold bars were not what they seemed, and ditto the guitar strings. And it was my friend Bob who revealed both. Interesting.

I think that God tries to speak to us through our dreams sometimes, but I don’t believe all dreams come from Him. How do you tell the difference? Maybe some people can. Maybe it’s just another one of those mysteries that we are not really meant to understand. So many mysteries.

Proverbs 8:10-11 Choose my instruction instead of silver, knowledge rather than choice gold, for wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her.

Dream Diary - Showdown

Okay, I have one short little dream fragment that I want to put in the record. This dream didn’t have anything to do with my eyes like the other dreams I have recounted here, but I wanted to put it down anyway. This was Friday night.
In the dream, two men were having a shootout, like in the old west. They were standing, facing each other, when one of the men took a coin out of his pocket and flipped it up into the air. The coin arced high in the air, and as it came down he pulled his gun and fired, shooting his opponent dead. As the dead man fell, the coin hit the ground and it had a perfect hole right through the center of it.
That was such an interesting scene that I had to write it down. I’ve been reading some Louis L'Amour books lately, that's probably where the shootout came from, but I don’t know what that coin was all about. It was like a scene from a movie. I don’t know who the men were, or why they were having a showdown.
The rest of my dreams from that night are mostly forgotten. I remember something about a large building with lots of halls and passages through it, kind of like a weird shopping mall. I was supposed to be working, but I kept getting lost in all the hallways. Time was passing and I wasn’t getting my work done. That sense of being lost somewhere seems to be a fairly common element in my dreams. I’ll have to try and note them as they occur.
That’s it, just wanted to share that.

I dreamed of you. I dreamed you were wandering in the dark, and so was I. We found each other.
-Stephen King, “The Green Mile”

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind but now I see.

Dream Diary - Brett Favre

Well, that was a disappointing superbowl, I really wanted the Colts to win. I can be happy for the Saints, though. I don’t think they’ve ever won a superbowl before and they’ve had a good team for three or four years now so they earned it. During the game, they said the superbowl will be in Dallas next year. It kind of makes me wish I was still there, not that I would have gone to the game, but it would be neat to be so close to one.

When I was talking about the superbowl yesterday, I mentioned Brett Favre. That reminded me that I’ve had a couple of dreams lately that he was in. One was just two or three nights ago. In that dream, I was in high school again, and it seems like I was having some trouble with a bully or something like that. I was in what I believe was the school library, talking about my situation with three quote tough guys unquote. They were giving me some advice on how to handle the bully, but I was disappointed because I wanted them to handle him for me. The three tough guys were Brett Favre, another football player that I don’t remember, and Lance Bailey. Lance really did go to my school, he was two years older than me and his family lived right across the road from me when we were kids. That’s all I remember from that dream.

The other dream occurred some time ago. In that one, Brett Favre was a good friend of mine. We were in a football stadium. There was going to be a football game, but the stadium was still mostly empty, just a few people moving about here and there. Brett was showing me around the field. After a bit, he said he had to go get ready for the game, so he left me on the sideline and trotted off to the locker room. That was a pretty awesome dream as I recall.

Dreams are such funny things. Sometimes it seems like they really do hold important clues for us, and sometimes it seems they are just random bits of nonsense. I have a theory about dreams and deja vu, maybe I’ll share it with you sometime.

Deuteronomy 29:29 The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.

Dream Diary - Patience

Hi there! Long time, no see. This will be a short post, probably. I have an interesting dream fragment that I wanted to put in the record.

In the dream, I was at the Baptist church in Gibbon, the church I attended in my youth, the church Mom still attends today. I was hanging around with my friend Joe Gangwish. Incidentally, Joe is the brother of Bobbi's husband Mike Gangwish. I don't remember what Joe and I were doing but I also vaguely remember Joe’s mom, Francey, being there. Anyway, they disappeared after a bit.

The interesting part began when I entered a certain room of the church, I think it was the parlor. There were several people sitting around a large table playing password. Remember that old game? It used to be a game show, too. Anyway, one of the people was a guy named Ron Sheets that I used to work with when I lived in Kansas City. I don’t remember what he said to me, but he indicated that he wanted my help with the game. He had a word printed on a card and he wanted me to help him come up with clues to give the other players. He held out the card and showed it to me, and the wordprinted on it was “patience.”

Now I wonder what that dream could possibly mean. I’m not sure if this matters, but the cards they were using were kind of like little gift tags, you know the kind that have “to” and "from" printed on them. The backs of the cards had some kind of Christmas design on them. The front had a Christmas design on the top half, and the bottom half had the hand-written password on it. I’m not sure what the Christmas tie-in means. Maybe something to do with how impatient I was feeling at Christmas last year.

So that was my dream. We are being bombarded today. There are chunks of ice falling from the trees and banging all over our roof. Kind of creepy.

Thanks for reading. Try to stay warm!

Dream Diary - Pool Tournament

I had a pretty strange dream last night. It had something to do with my blindness so it caught my attention more than most dreams I have.

In the dream, I was in this bar *& grill that I worked in as a cook a long time ago. The owner of the bar used to hold these little pool tournaments, and that’s what was happening in the dream. I was playing in the tournament, along with my brother Kevin, my friend Jon Nutter, and another guy named Mark Krueger. Mark was a friend of Kevin’s back in high school.

So I guess it was just the four of us. I was drawing up a playoff grid for us and putting down each person’s initials where they were supposed to play. I was supposed to play in a game against my friend Jon. We were just getting ready to start our game, when the dream skipped a little.

There were some people sitting at tables watching us play pool, and suddenly I was standing there talking to one of them. It was Brian Kroll, someone else I knew in high school but haven’t had much contact with since. He has a beard now, but in the dream he looked the way he did in school. He was asking me about the farm I live on now., and I was explaining that I just live there, I don’t farm it because I’m blind and drawing social security and everything. Then he was saying that he might turn me in because he didn’t really think I was blind, seeing as how I was playing in the pool tournament and all. I told him to go ahead if he wanted because my blindness had been certified by a doctor.

Then I was back to the pool game, but now I was playing against my dad instead of Jon. I was trying to line up a shot, but was havng a lot of trouble. I would look at the pool table, noting the positions of the balls. Then I would move around the table and look from a different angle, but everything looked different. Back and forth I went trying to figure it out. Finally I counted how many balls were on the table. There were six. So I turned to Dad and said “How many balls are there on the table?” and he said “Nine.” The overall feeling was that I couldn’t see the table properly because of my blindness.

Well, then my brother, Kevin, came over to the table and started moving the balls around. I got mad and decided to leave. On my way out I saw a policeman just kind of standng around. I was scared that I would get in trouble because I was playing pool when I was supposed to be blind, and I wanted to aboid going near him.

I made it out without incident, and the next thing I know, I’m driving down a country road going home. I was in the car I had in high school, a 1971 Ford. The car wasn’t running very well, but I wasn’t very concerned about it. I was thinking that if I was going to be driving this car again, I would have to get a stereo in it. It only had the old A.M. radio that was in the car originally. The last thing I remember is thespeedometer. I looked down at it and the numbers going across were like, 17, 33, 63, etcetera, instead of 10, 20, 30. Of course, that didn’t seem odd at all.

I have no idea what any of that means. Such a weird jumble of people and places and ideas. But I guess dreams are that way. I’m a little disturbed by the overall sense of guilt at not being as blind as I should be. I’ll have to think about that.

There’s one more little dream fragment that I want to note, but this was not part of the pool tournament dream. It’s not really clear at all; I just remember something about my high school, my band teacher, pop machines, (or soda machines if you’re not a mid-westerner), and a guy that I worked with at my last job. That guy, Ken, is the significant part. In an earlier post, I said that I didn’t have any friends at my job, but that wasn't completely true. Ken and I would talk sometimes or go to lunch once in a while, although we never saw each other outside of work.

Anyway, Ken emailed me shortly after I moved up here. It was just a quick, “How ya doing" email, and I sent him a quick one back and that was it. Then last week I got another email from him asking me to call him. I've been debating whether to call or not. Part of me wants to leave that part of my life behind and not look back. Also, I hate talking on the phone. I've been saving the email with his phone number, and last night I had finally decided to just delete the email and forget it. But before I did, I decided to ask God. I asked Him if I should call Ken or not, then I closed up my email for the night. Lo and behold, Ken showed up in my dream last night. So I suppose I'll have to call him, darn it. I really hate talking on the phone. Oh well, you gotta do what you gotta do. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Job 33:15-17 In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed; Then he openeth the ears of men, and sealeth their instruction, That he may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man.

Dream Diary - Seeing Again

Hi there folks. Boy, I’m posting like crazy this week aren’t I? It’s Thursday night, kinda late. I had actually gone to bed, but I was just laying there thinking about something and I had the feeling that I wouldn’t get any sleep until I wrote this down.

You see, I had the dream again last night. Wednesday night I mean. That dream. The one where I can see. Let me see if I can explain this…

I have never had a dream where I was blind. Not a single one. But occasionally I have dreams where I can see again. Does that make any sense? I’m talking about dreams in which I suddenly realize that I am not blind. I have had three or four of these in the last year.

The one I had last night was particularly strong. I was just going about my dreamy business as usual and suddenly I realized that I was not blind. I started looking around at everything in amazement. I wish I had written this down right away because I can’t really remember now exactly what I was looking at. I can’t exactly remember if I was in a familiar place or not, although I think I was not. I became so overjoyed at getting my sight back, that I began to cry, and I remember thinking “I have to stop crying so I don’t damage my eyes again.”

When I woke from the dream it was still night-time. I still have a little bit of light perception in my right eye so I can tell if there’s a light on in the room, or if the sun is shining in through the window. It was dark when I woke. I looked to my right where the night stand is. I have one of those clocks with the red digital numbers on it. I just had to look to make sure, you know. Nothing. That was not a happy moment.

Like I said, I’ve had dreams like this three or four times now; never exactly the same but similar. Waking from these is heart-breaking. And this one was so strong. Even though most of the details have faded, the power of the dream remains, even 24 hours later.

Anyway, I just wanted to get this in my blog before it slips my mind completely. Someday, when I get my sight back, it will be interesting to read back over these and see what was going through my mind during this time of my life. To my future self I would like to say this: “Check it out man, dream come true.
